Our mission is "To help student-athletes take responsibility for their futures through lessons learned on the playing field, in the classroom, and in service to others."

March madness does not happen just in basketball.  At Play It Smart headquarters we have been experiencing our own March madness in terms of hitting the road to visit schools and school districts, planning the annual conference, reading applications from new schools that want to join the Play It Smart family, developing new curricula and securing new benefits for our member schools.

Busy is good - interest in Play It Smart is mushrooming as is our opportunity to put more youngsters on the path to success.  National Service Week is just around the corner; a great way to highlight the last quarter of the year.  We look forward to sharing the creative and impactful projects undertaken by our schools.

Please enjoy and feel free to provide us with feedback.

Sincerely,

Len

National Co-Captain

Brian Baez, a seventh grader at Roberto Clemente Middle School in New Haven, Connecticut, is the February 2008 Play it Smart National Co-Captain.  He is the youngest person in the history of the program to win the coveted National Co-Captain Award. Baez is described as an outstanding student-athlete and is growing tremendously as a team leader and offensive linemen. Under the nurturing guidance of Academic Coach Anthony Hargett, Brian has begun to understand the value of the Play It Smart program. "He is diligent and at the same time exudes a joy for learning and achieving in the area of academics," says Hargett.

We all know that Play It Smart is a great program, now others are beginning to take notice.  Teen Kids News featured Play It Smart at Mount Vernon HS in a recent newscast.  "Alot of people want to go to college, but a lot of people aren't able to balance school and sports", said Jamar who participates in the program at Mountain Vernon.  "Being able to do that really builds our confidence."

2008-2009 Existing School Application Process

The deadline for STEP II is April 1, 2008; all schools that would like to continue membership in Play It Smart for 2008-09 are required to complete this application. Applications can be mailed or faxed to our national office.

Also attached is a copy of our grant guidelines for you to reference when completing the application. As you are aware, an important excerpt to note from the grant guidelines:

"Beginning in the third year of program implementation, schools/school districts are expected to fund the Academic Coach position.  Current member schools may apply for continued funding from Play It Smart beyond the second year, but receipt of such funding is not guaranteed.  Priority consideration is given to schools that have a demonstrated financial need AND have made effort to seek sustained funding outside of national resources."

Recently Play It Smart has been successful at partnering with several school districts to fund local programs, and we are excited about the possibilities for future partnerships with other schools/districts as well. As school boards and districts become more aware of Play It Smart's various components and significant results, they have understood the significant return they receive for their investment in the program. We encourage schools to take action in communicating with their school boards and districts about the need for Play It Smart programming in their community. Please feel free to contact me if we can be of assistance in your efforts to connect with school district officials in your area.

We expect the 2008-09 application process to be highly competitive, as we received approximately 200 applications last year.  This spring we will review each school application and evaluate their program's compliance with Play It Smart expectations and guidelines from previous years. This process will help determine which schools will receive Play It Smart grants and services for the upcoming academic year. All schools will be notified of their application status by May 15, 2008.

NFF teams up with GoodSearch

goodsearch

Now when you search for study tips or food recipes, The National Football Foundation gets a donation from you, best of all you don't have to pay a red cent.

The National Football Foundation has teamed up with GoodSearch to raise money for the foundation.  GoodSearch is a powerful search engine that is powered by Yahoo! Search.  Each time that you use GoodSearch, one cent is donated to The National Football Foundation.  This  may not sound like much, but if each person receiving The Extra Point (about 350 people) would use GoodSearch just once a day for one year then foundation would receive $1,277.50! Just think $1,200 just for using a search engine, that's pretty good!

Please go to GoodSearch.com and set the charity as "The National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame" as your charity.  Once you do this every time you use GoodSearch a penny will be donated.  The beauty of it all is that you don't have to specify your charity each time you use GoodSearch.

Take GoodSearch one step further and download the toolbar for all your search engine needs.  We (The National Office) began using GoodSearch Friday March 7th and we have already amassed $4.30.  Please join us!

117 Play It Smart Athletes Sign Letters of Intent

The National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame (NFF) highlighted today that 117 student-athletes from Play It Smart, the NFF's highly successful youth development program, signed national letters of intent last month with universities that participate in the Division I football subdivisions.

"The realization of a dream, National Letter of Intent Day is a special day for every college football player. It dictates not only the next four years of his life but the next forty," said NFF President and CEO Steven J. Hatchell. "We are extremely proud of the passion and countless hours that our academic coaches devote throughout the year to prepare all of their players for life after high school."

The breakdown included 70 student-athletes heading to the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) and 47 signing letters with Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) teams.
The numbers mean that the likely number of Play It Smart alumni on FBS rosters will increase from 190 student-athletes last year to more than 230 in the 2008 season with a comparable impact in the FCS total with more than 150 players.  Click Here to Read Article.

Study Hall Time in your Play It Smart Program

Play It Smart

Spring has finally arrived!  This is the critical time where Play It Smart member schools evaluate their program goals and objectives, and decide to re-adjust or stay the course in an effort to end the school year with strong components in place.  We wanted to take this time to bring a bit more focus to a critical component in building a successful Play It Smart program: Study Hall.

On average member schools are working to establish 2.5 Study Halls per week, at 55 minutes in length and with 85% attendance. We know that there are many challenges member schools face when establishing year round programming, especially a consistent study hall.

The start and end time of the school day; lack of lights on the practice field; multiple sport student-athletes; family obligations for student-athletes; lack of after school support from tutors, teachers and counselors; inadequate space; transportation issues; are several roadblocks member schools have identified that impact the overall effectiveness of study hall.  However, these challenges can be met and overcome with a solid support team of administrators, coaches, and teachers in place.

Castlemont hosts College Fair

Castlemont Community of Small Schools Play It Smart program teamed up with other student organizations to host a college fair for students and parents.  Castlemont Academic Coach Harold Logwood used his connections to help bring in over 30 exhibitors to the event. Morehouse College, University of California at Berkley, and the United States Military Academy at West Point we just a few of the colleges and universities in attendance.

The event was highly successful and received praises from collegiate admissions directors and students.  "So many of our Leadership students reported that it was very worthwhile, said Denise Jeffery Principal of the Leadership Preparatory School at Castlemont Community of Small School. They are going to college!"
