Len Stachitas |
| Len Stachitas became the executive director of Play It Smart and vice president of the National Football Foundation in February, 2007. As executive director, Stachitas oversees the day-to-day operations of Play It Smart while seeking to expand the program’s reach through new fundraising initiatives and strategic partnerships. Prior to Play It Smart, Stachitas served as the vice president for Resource Development for the World Golf Foundation’s The First Tee program. While at The First Tee, Stachitas built a reputation as a top fundraiser with expertise in corporate sponsorships, government relations, life skills education and information systems. While he was at The First Tee, the organization raised over $72 million, including 34 gifts of $1 million or more and 30 corporate sponsorship deals. He also helped secure $10.5 million in federal funding. A member of The First Tee team from the start, he helped conceive the policies and procedures that have made The First Tee one of the nation’s leading youth service organizations while developing an extensive background in life skills education. In the past, Stachitas has worked at Barnes & Roche as a senior vice president, consulting for non-profit institutions that included Big Brothers/Big Sisters of America, the University of Virginia, the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education and the Jimmy V Foundation for Cancer Research. His extensive fundraising experience also includes successful stints as the former director of development at the Wharton School and as the director of major gifts at Duke University. Stachitas holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Pennsylvania, 1975. He and his wife Martha have three sons Ted, Tucker, and Chet. |
Charles
Gomes |
| Charles has been with Play It Smart
from its earliest stages. After assisting Dr. Al Petitpas with the initial
development, Charles worked full-time as an academic coach at South Shore
and Canarsie High Schools in Brooklyn, New York from 1998 to 2002. From 2002 to 2005, Charles served as a regional coordinator for the program and took over as National Director on January 1, 2006. Prior to Play It Smart, Charles earned a degree in psychology from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and a master of education in athletic counseling from Springfield College. His career has included stints working for a youth detention facility, coaching football at Carver HS in Massachusetts, and serving as an athletic counselor for mens basketball teams at Springfield College and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Charles has also worked extensively with NFL youth football initiatives such as the Junior Player Development program, the High School Player Development program, and the NFL/NFF Coaching Academy. |
Jeff McCann

| Jeff started with the initial team that developed the pilot program for Play It Smart, working as an Academic Coach at James Hillhouse High School in New Haven, Conn., from 1998 to 2003. From 2002 to 2005, Jeff also served as a Regional Coordinator for the program. He assumed responsibilities as Associate Director on July 1, 2006, after a brief return role as an Academic Coach at New Brunswick High School in the 2005-06 school year. During the summers from 1998 –2002, Jeff additionally worked with the National Youth Sports Program at Yale University. Prior to Play It Smart, McCann worked in the mental health field with at-risk youth for KidsPeace National Hospital, Northwestern Human Services, and Northampton County Youth Advocate Programs in the Lehigh Valley, Pa. for almost 6 years. Jeff has also kept active in youth recreation programs as a volunteer and has provided athletic counseling consultation to various student-athletes, parents, high school coaches and college coaches. Jeff earned an undergraduate degree in Administration of Justice from The Pennsylvania State University in 1992, and received a Master's of Education in Counseling Psychology from Springfield College in 1999. |
